Jean Lafitte was a privateer, entrepreneur, sailor and spy as well as the hero of the Battle of New Orleans. In 1814, as the British lay at the mouth of the river, Lafitte rushed supplies and troops to General Jackson at Chalmette.  The British were beaten when instead of the British finding an under-supplied and out-manned force they found a wild group of pirates, woodsmen, Indians and free people of color.
